Sledging. Top places in and around Brno

Winter 2020/2021 is full of surprises. First, the ski season didn’t start properly, then all off sudden swimming in the ice water started and became a boom. It was snowing heavily, even in the least expected places like Spain. People, who would normally spend their afternoon in the shopping centres set off to the wilderness. Going off the beaten tracks, demolishing, parking illegally and behaving irresponsibly. Of course, let’s not forget about the constant state of emergency. But the winter is not over yet. What else can happen?

One of the positive aspects of this year’s winter is long awaited snow. In Brno we haven’t seen it for a little while now.

With snow comes joy. Smiles on kids’ faces appear one by one. Parents brainstorm all the possible places to sledge, where to go for a winter wonderland walk or simply where to build a snowman. The answer is simple, read the post till the very end!

SLEDGING IN BRNO

We’ve already tested more than few places, so that we chose the best of the best.

PALACKEHO VRCH IN KRALOVE POLE

Let me start with our recent discovery. It’s a perfect spot for autumn kite season, but it’s also an ideal location for sledging. The Palackeho Vrch (Palacky Hill) is behind the VUT  University, and the sport areal VUT. You can park along the road if you choose to go by car or you can take a bus 53 and use bus station: Palackeho Vrch.

A HILL BEHIND THE ZEBETIN POND

It’s famous for its 700-meter-long ride. Climbing back on top is tiresome, but worth it. It doesn’t work if the snow coverage is low. The hill has to be really white. Parking is possible at the pond or along the road from Chrpova street.

MEDLANKY PLAYGROUND

You can enjoy the little hills close to the playgrounds in Medlanky. Parking along the street: V ujezdech. After all the winter madness you can enjoy take away food from Moravia restaurant or coffee to go from Rotatoria Caffe.

OUTSIDE OF BRNO, BUT WITHIN 30 MINUTES BY CAR

When the snow cover slowly starts to vanish in Brno you may be amazed how much it is left a bit further away.

NESLOVICE

Unbelievably fantastic place for families with kids. There’re several hill to slide down, huge playground if your little ones get bored with sledging. You can find it by searching for Indianske Hriste in Neslovice. (mapy.cz). It’s around 20 kilometres from Brno, depending where your starting point is. You need to go through Popuvky and Tetcice. The parking spot is right before the playground, but it’s quite small. We on the other hand parked at the restaurant Dobre Chvile and walked around 600 meters there.

OCHOZ U BRNA

When choosing this location, I was a bit afraid we won’t find any small hill to sledge. How mistaken I was. And it’s not like there’s only one little hill to sledge that you’ll miss on your way. When going from Brno you will be directed through Vinohrady and Klajdovka. Once you approach Ochoz u Brna you’ll see all the possibilities. I don’t really have to point every hill in Ochoz, I’m sure you will see it for yourself. We parked at the Hadek parking place, and there’s one hill for sledging as well. In addition to sledging, people were skating on the Hadecky pond and the Restaurant pod Hadkem was opened for a take away hot food. Cash only.

U BUKU

Between Brno Sobesice and Utechov grows a beautiful, old and enormous beech. There’s also a hill surrounded by amazing nature waiting for daredevils. There’s only one disadvantage, the parking place called U buku is designated for around 20-30 cars and this place is quite popular. You better hurry.  Nearby there’s also a great educationa path for kids. Check it out.

MOKRA HORAKOV

There’s a hill next to Cafe Bistro Mezi Stromy. Sledging plus take away food sound good. Mokra Horakov is on the other way of Ochoz. You can combine those two trips together if you have strenght to do that.

What’s your favourite place?
