Klinovec – the highest peak in Ore Mountains
Klínovec, also known as Keilberg in German, stands tall at 1,244 meters above sea level. It proudly claims the title of the highest mountain in the Ore Mountains, which straddle the border between the Czech Republic and Germany. Let’s explore this majestic peak and its surroundings.
Mining History
The Ore Mountains have a rich history of mining, particularly for ores and silver. Klínovec itself has been shaped by centuries of mining activity, dating back to the 14th century. UNESCO recognized the unique nature of this region, and several mining landscapes were inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2019.
Touristic Trails
While Klínovec was once a popular destination for travelers (even Goethe visited!), it remains relatively undiscovered by tourists today. However, that’s changing as more people explore the Ore Mountains. Choose on of the following paths to reach its summit:
Boží Dar – Klinovec: This is a popular 8 kilometers path starting near Bozi Dar. It’s considered moderately challenging and takes about 2 hours and 16 minutes to complete. The trail offers forest views, wildflowers, and wildlife.
Ostrov Klinovec Loop: This challenging route takes about 7 hours and 29 minutes to complete. It’s popular for hiking and mountain biking, and the best times to visit are from May through October.
Jáchymovské Peklo: An 8.5 km long easy trail suitable for buggies and push bikes. It’s an educational trail dedicated to the Uran mines, former prison camps, and the nature of the Ore Mountains.
If you’re not able to walk, but still would love to see the beautiful views, you can ride your car and park on the top.
