Skiing near Brno: Hodonin u kunstatu

Snow in Brno has last been seen in 2010 and so we decided it is high time to go look for it.  

I missed a bit of snowboarding, my five-year-old daughter wanted to learn how to ski and the little one just wanted to have some fun in the snow.  

I looked up for some ski resorts nearby and I came across Hodonin u Kunstatu Ski. It’s located only 50 kilometers northwest of Brno going through Cerna Hora and Lysice. It took us around an hour to get there. It’s fast and easy till Cerna Hora, then scary narrow routes. And imagine, we were looking for snow and we brought back some of it. On our way back it was snowing in Brno-yeaa.  

SATURDAY MORNING

That foggy and grey Saturday morning we arrived at the parking lot at the SKI Resort Hodonin u Kunstatu.  

I was surprised by the number of people. Taking into consideration it is not that far from Brno I expected far more of them. There were still free parking spots, the line to the lift wasn’t that bad and overall, at the hill you could feel some freedom. Of course the earlier the better. Around noon the situation changed a bit, but only because several ski schools drove by.  

SKIING

The hill was 629 meters above sea level and that was enough for me as a beginner, because that’s who I’m after a 4-year break in snowboarding.  

The nice thing about SKI Hodonin u Kunstatu is the fact that the 50 m kids lift was free of charge. The small hill with some slalom toys was separated and every kid eager to learn some new moves could just go there.  

SKI SCHOOL

Ski school costs 600 kc for 50 minutes. That seemed a lot at the beginning, but with free lift and substantial discount for ski rent it wasn’t. And of course kid happiness: PRICELESS.  

I suggest to pack some snacks and beverages for the trip. Even though there is a ski bar , you might not be fully satisfied with the offer. Just the regular: hot-dogs, panini and a Czech style soup.  

HOW MUCH IT COSTS?

When it comes to the lift prices, there are two options: an hour ticket or points ticket. I made a deal of a lifetime. I bought an hour ticket for 250 kc and went only 4 times. Somehow miscalculated my abilities plus I changed a diaper in the meantime, not mine, fortunately. Depending on how fast you go and how many people are there, choose what suits you best. And don’t make my mistake.  

EVENING RIDE

Another good thing about the SKI Hodonin u Kunstatu is the fact they are open til 8 o’clock pm. Meaning the hill is well lit. You can grab your stuff after work and go for a spontaneous quick slide. Lucky you. One or two hours of extreme sport will do just right for everyone. I’m guessing late in the afternoon during the week you’ll have the whole hill to yourself.
