Explore the hidden gem in Lipnice nad Sazavou

Hidden among the peaceful forests in Vysočina region, is one of the most intriguing trails in the Czech Republic. The unexpected rock reliefs in Lipnice nad Sázavou. We visited in February, but the weather felt like spring. And therefore we enjoyed this easy, family‑friendly hike.

These monumental reliefs—part sculpture, part landscape—turn an ordinary forest walk into a surreal, almost mythological experience.

A BIT OF HISTORY BEHIND IT

Stoneworking in Lipnice nad Sazavou is the centuries‑old tradition. Medieval quarries supplied stones for churches in Dolní Město, Růžená, and Krásná Hora. Quarrymen carved, shaped, and hauled the rock using only human strength, iron tools, and wooden wedges. In the later 19th and 20th centuries the craft faded, but the landscape still holds the traces:

  • perfectly cut blocks
  • tool marks in quarry walls
  • remnants of stone transport paths

WHAT’S THERE

Bretschneider’s Ear (Bretschneiderovo ucho)

A huge stone ear carved into a smooth quarry wall, representing listening, monitoring, and communication. It feels like the forest itself is paying attention.

Mouth of Truth (Ústa pravdy)

Inspired loosely by the Roman Bocca della Verità, this stone mouth even developed a natural water spring during carving—sometimes forming a miniature waterfall or winter icefall.

Golden Eyes (Zlatý voči)

Two stylized, symbolic eyes embedded in rock, referencing ancient protective motifs as well as modern ideas of surveillance and observation. A hidden rotating granite sphere (around 80 kg!) completes the concept.

Along the way, you’ll also pass fascinating historic quarry sites, old tool marks, and remnants of the stone‑cutting traditions that once shaped local churches and even Lipnice Castle itself.

WHICH WAY TO CHOOSE?

Standard Loop: “Národní památník odposlechu”

This is the most common circular route linking all major sculptures.

  • Distance: ~3–4 km

  • Difficulty: Easy, suitable for families

The trail usually starts at the Lipnice fish ponds or by the Bretschneiderovo ucho information board. The sequence often goes:
Ear → Mouth → Eyes → back via the ponds or quarry paths.

We on the other hand started with mouth, then walked to ear and left eyes at the end.
