History and Background

Walbrzych Castle, also known as Książ Castle, stands on a rock cliff alongside the Pelcznica River. It is the third-largest castle in Poland and is often referred to as the “Pearl of Lower Silesia.” Here’s a glimpse into its rich history:

Origins: The castle’s origins date back to the 13th century when it was built by the Silesian Piast dynasty. Over the centuries, it changed hands several times. It was owned by various noble families, including the Hochberg family, who were its most significant owners for over 400 years until the end of World War II.

Architectural Marvel: The castle exhibits a mixture of architectural styles due to the different periods of its construction and renovations. It features elements of Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, and Neo-Romanesque styles, reflecting the tastes and preferences of its various owners.

World War II: During World War II, the castle served as a residence for German royalty. It was also a secret storage site for valuable art and treasures.

Post-War Era: After the war, the castle fell into disrepair. However, extensive restoration efforts have preserved its historical significance.

Legends and Myths

Like many historic castles, Książ has its share of legends and mysteries. One of the most famous stories is about a hidden treasure believed to be buried somewhere within the castle or its grounds. Despite numerous searches over the years, the treasure has never been found, adding to the castle’s allure and mystique.

Underground Complex

One of the most intriguing features of Książ Castle is its extensive underground complex, which includes tunnels, chambers, and bunkers. During World War II, the Nazis used these underground passages for various purposes, including as a potential headquarters for Adolf Hitler.

Hiking Around Książ Castle

The area surrounding Książ Castle offers breathtaking natural beauty. Begin your adventure by wandering through the castle grounds. Admire the well-manicured gardens, fountains, and sculptures. The area is huge. One can get lost in the castle park. But the real adventure starts in the forest around the castle. It is nestled in a 315,500-acre nature reserve, surrounded by dense forests. Follow the marked trails that lead you deeper into the wilderness, until you reach the Nowy Dwor Castle Ruins. From here, you can either get back or follow for more. My hike took me around 2 hours.

Visiting with Your Dog

It’s not allowed to enter the castle, or even the castle’s courtyard with your dog. My family went for a castle tour, while I with my dog were wandering around and searching for gorgeous views.
